Base Intelligent
Communities

Base arrived with a message that tried to speak to everyone and reached no one. We rebuilt it into a campaign told across six acts, a bespoke marketing framework, and a complete messaging system, all built on a single scientific truth about how communities move and grow together.

01 - The Client
Base is a community super-app: Spaces, messaging, payments, and a growing suite of built-in tools, all in one platform. It's built for the institutions generic tools were never designed to hold: faith communities, business teams, sports clubs, and grassroots movements. The product was ambitious and already live. What it didn't yet have was a story capable of carrying four very different audiences at once.
02 - The Challenge
Base's marketing said "build better communities." It was true, and it was invisible. One flat message was being asked to speak to a pastor, a startup operations lead, a club secretary, and a grassroots organiser, four people with nothing in common except the tool they needed. And the ask itself was heavy: moving an entire community onto a new platform is a high-trust decision, and nothing in the marketing had earned that trust before making it.

"The product was built for connection. The marketing connected with no one."

03 - The Insight
A 2008 study of starling murmurations found that each bird coordinates with just six or seven neighbours: no leader, no central signal. Thousands move as one through nothing but local trust.
This wasn't a metaphor we reached for. It was a precise description of what Base already was, a network that grows one connection at a time, where a message can travel through the whole community in seconds because every member passes it to the few nearest them. (Ballerini et al., University of Rome, STARFLAG project.) From that single truth, the entire marketing system was built.
04 - The Approach
Diagnosis
We found the one true thing: Base isn't an app for audiences, it's infrastructure for movements, and it grows the way a murmuration does, one leader bringing the many.
Architecture
We built three interlocking systems around that truth: a proprietary framework, a messaging voice, and a six-month campaign, so every decision traced back to one idea.
Infrastructure
We handed the team tools they run without us: a campaign brief filter, 30+ tagged headlines, and a four-question review test that keeps every post on-voice.
05 - What We Built
  1. The Base C.O.R.E. Framework. A bespoke marketing operating system on four principles: Community First, One Becomes Many, Relevance by Vertical, and Earn Trust Before You Ask, supported by AARRR metrics, StoryBrand messaging, and a self-reinforcing Content Flywheel.
  2. The Voice of The Gathering. A complete messaging system built on a three-beat emotional sequence, Recognition → Revelation → Urgency, with four distinct audience dialects, 30+ channel-tagged headlines, and a four-question review filter for quality control at scale.
  3. The Gathering campaign. A six-act campaign architecture running June to November, from Ignition: the first starling takes flight to Peak: the murmuration is complete, each month carrying a narrative theme, a real-world precedent, and a measurable target.
